Chiba grew up like any other Nara, being trained to be intellect at a young age, given puzzles no toddler should be trying to learn for another five to ten years. Of course, the generation of Nara have always shown high intellect, so it was only natural for Chiba to pass the tests he was given with little trouble. With his mind being exercised, he was becoming more and more like the ideal ninja, being taught the clan's jutsu and learning of the values of their clan. However, one person did not enjoy how Chiba's life was being drained away its childhood, a man by the name of Kijima, Chiba's uncle.

Kijima always found some time to take Chiba away and send him off on his own trips, so he can experience life and see other parts of it aside from the way of the ninja. This was because he was one of the failures of his clan, leaving the way of the ninja to go off and enjoy the more pleasurable aspects of life. And he does not regret any of it. Chiba's parents detested this, but whenever they were trying to stop him, he was already gone off with his uncle. This occurred for five years until the age of 12, when he was given his first weapon, a knife named Kuchiku, a weapon designed in black and gold, with kanji of its name on its side. The knife is a switchblade, capable of being erected from within its handle to expose a blade of sharpness. Kijima told Chiba that this knife was forged from the ancient powers of the shadow people, the old ancestors of the Nara clan, and thus it not only nearly unbreakable, but has a power that has yet to be unlocked.

Using his new weapon, Chiba went around testing it on trees and small wild life. The more he used it, the more addictive he got to the weapon. He was starting to hone his skills effectively as a knife user, becoming more in the way of some sort of assassin who hid in the shadows, awaiting for the right moment to leap out and attack his foes, much like what a real ninja did. And this angered his uncle, who was expecting the opposite from Chiba. So, he sat the boy down one day and explained to him how he should focus more on living than on trying to die for his country. This then placed Chiba at a fork in the road, as his parents soon decided to ban his uncle from the clan. When this occurred, his uncle disappeared without a trace.

Months passed, but Chiba remembered his uncle's words, continuing to think back and forth between the two paths of life set in front of him. But then one day, his uncle appeared, only to be attacking his parents. An argument broke out between them, swords drawn in an effort to see who would draw blood first. And in the middle of it all, Chiba spectated it, taking the entire scene all in, from the words being passed between both parties to the actions that followed. However, his uncle managed to trap his parents in a shadow bind jutsu, yet his parents were capable of doing the same thing, placing them both at stalemate. But then, each shouted to Chiba who held his knife, commanding him to kill the other for their misleading of his mind.

Once again, Chiba was at that fork, something he was already struggling on decision in his mind, but was now made into a reality right there in front of his eyes. He was frightened, perplexed, confused, baffled; there was so many emotions going on that he couldn't even think straight. His mind was becoming twisted in all this contradicting logic that he just couldn't take it anymore. And so, he did something that did not suspect: he attacked them all with that knife, Kuchiku. He did not kill them, but he left them cuts to have to recover from for a while. The next day, he seemed to have forgotten about the entire ordeal, only receiving the story that his uncle came in and attacked his parents. And thus, he claims eternal hatred against his relative, who had already fled from the village. However, his entire persona had changed that day: his outlook on the world was transformed, making him more into this sadistic type of person. Though it's hard to say he's becoming a killer, it's not a doubt that he's on the road toward being one.
